It's still broad daylight when Elijah arrives at the café, despite late afternoon creeping in; meeting at a public place is rule number one but something about the brightness feels a little more vulnerable. Or maybe he just hates summer. It also doesn't help that the only empty table is the one he usually meets Sarai at, to sit with a grimace on his face and act like he doesn't give a shit whilst quickly scanning her face and arms for fresh bruises. It doesn't feel right, meeting Mia here, discussing business. But needs must, and work is work, so here he is, nursing a coffee in the back corner and people-watching to try and distract himself from the pit in his stomach. A target at school is... new. Close to home. And with Mia. If he could combine the three worst possibilities for an assignment, this would be it. Usually she's bearable at best, but after the encounter in Diagon, it's the only thing he's been thinking about since; he tries not to, due to the nausea it tends to bring on, but it's difficult. Whatever. They know each other's secret now, so they can't use it against each other. That should be safe.

Don't get her wrong; Mia's also far from thrilled to be here today, but needs must. She's already started messaging the girl they're targeting, mostly about class, but she's making progress. It'll help in the end. "Do you ever not look like you've just swollen a lemon?" she asks as she slides into the seat across from him, pulling two books out of her bag as she does so. She shoves them across the table at him: the first, a book on wandless magic, the second titled Self-Defensive Spellwork, and the third titled Protection Charm Your Mind: A Practical Guide to Counter Legilimency. Not that he can tell without opening them; they've been glamoured to look like old copies of Anna Karenina, split into three volumes. Written in Russian - she reckons it's enough of a deterrent for anyone trying to snoop. Honestly, she debated for a long time whether to get these books or not, but ultimately she decided it's important he learn to control himself so he doesn't accidentally lash out at her brother or something and get both of them killed. So here they are. "Don't let anyone touch these," is all she says as an explanation, tone a little harsh. "But I thought you might find them interesting. Anna Karenina is Tally's favourite book, you know? Bad taste."

He has neither the patience nor the energy to engage in their typical bickering today, having turned to ice the second he saw her enter the café - which is not a good feeling to have, considering he sees far more of Mia than he'd ever desire to - and approach the table, looking particularly stony-faced herself. The books confuse him even further, especially when he opens the covers and sees streams of Cyrillic staring back at him. Mia's never exactly been easy to read but the past few days has been enough to make his head spin. "Care to explain?" He glances up at her momentarily, brow furrowed, but a quick glance back down to the book grabs his attention: the text has changed. No longer indecipherable symbols but- readable. English. And- oh. Things he's only read before in that spellbook he stole from Jai's room, the one that's almost dropping to pieces with wear and tear and the sheer amount of time he's spent reading it in secret, studying it. Only the spells on these pages are visibly more complex, some of the words beyond his comprehension, and Elijah snaps the cover shut before he can go any further. "I am beginning to think that you know a hell of a lot more about this than I do."

"What, can't you walk into a bookshop?" she asks, eyebrows raised as she leans back in her seat and crosses her arms. To be fair, she does have a considerable headstart, but at this point he should have tried to learn something. Even if it's just out of self-preservation. She knows he knows where Diagon Alley is. It's not hard to figure out that Flourish and Blotts means books. "You're going to need to learn something if we don't want to get caught. This isn't just your life on the line any more. Hate it if you want but we're kind of stuck together now."

Living in secret has meant learning magic at his own pace, and as slow and inconsistent as that was, it was his; it was in his control. And the thought of having to suddenly speed that up, to actually use his magic in real life or in the presence of other people makes his stomach churn, sweeping the book back towards her with his arm in visceral reaction, only narrowing missing the coffee cup. Fuck, his hands are shaking. "Get fucked." There isn't a motivation on Earth that could make him use his magic on purpose, not even his life being at risk. He'd honestly rather die. "We have done perfectly well so far without doing any of that. I am not starting now."

Mia hates herself for it, but she jumps a little at the abrupt reaction. Just a little. Her recovery is quick, though, and she narrows her eyes and pushes the books right back at him. "And what happens next time you lose your temper, huh? I'm not telling you to start flying around on a fucking broomstick, Elijah, but you need to know enough to not fuck up and get us both killed. I don't know if you've noticed, but this isn't a game. I'd like to survive until my eighteenth, and you walking around like a ticking time bomb is literally the opposite of what I need right now. So take the fucking books."

The remark about losing his temper only nauseates him further, as does her small but noticeable flinch; it makes him think of his dad, and then Az, in that order. Loss of control followed by guilt. He doesn't particularly want to be like either of them. "I lost my temper because you were refusing to answer my question," he says through gritted teeth, casting a momentary glance around the café to make sure no solitary drinkers are listening in and being nosy, though what sense they'd be able to make of this conversation is debatable. "And you still haven't answered it." The books feel like they're glaring at him, and he reaches out to push them further in Mia's direction just so they don't feel like they're burning a hole in the table. "Nothing is going to go wrong. The target is a normal person, is she not? There is no need to use that on her. It doesn't have to be difficult, you just want to make it so."

"Oh, sure, blame me if it makes you feel better," Mia tells him, ignoring the books this time as she snatches up the menu. Pushing them back at him feels childish, somehow. "What happens next time I don't answer your questions in a public place? You set my hair on fire? Sounds like a good way to end up floating face-down in the Thames." She glances up from the menu briefly, raising her eyebrows in challenge before she looks back down. "I'm not saying we use that on her, or on anyone. Honestly, she's barely important right now. I'm thinking about the long term here."

Talk about pushing every single button of insecurity he has; it just makes him think of fire, of Az setting the curtains on fire and God, he wants to go. The desire to run and start a new life somewhere prevails every single day but there's too much to stay for - someone needs to keep an eye on the twins, to talk their dad down from his sky-high tempers, to be the only normal sibling. Well, as normal as he can be. Right now, he's never felt less. "There's a simple answer there. You stop fucking around and answer my questions. It's not hard. Like I said-" Perhaps it's just paranoia but the feeling of being watched creeps up the back of his neck like shivers, so Elijah pulls his chair in further and leans in, voice lowering to a hiss. "-you clearly have experience with this. How the fuck did your father never pick up on anything?" The irony of his own situation is insane, but to be the daughter of the head witch hunter and have magic? That's on a whole other level.

Mia's not going to answer his questions; most of them, anyway. He sure as hell doesn't need to know what exactly she is. Too many weaknesses there. This one, though, she supposes she can answer, pulling her chair in to mirror him and answering in an equally low voice. "The first time I remember my dad killing a witch, I was seven. We were in a motel room, and we left the next morning, and I realised I was dead if he found out. Tends to be good motivation to learn how to control yourself." To be fair, she had a lot of help with that, but he doesn't need to know that. It takes away from the point. "Something you apparently still haven't figured out. I don't think you realise quite how much I have to lose here. So learn how to keep this a secret at least until I can get my uni place and leave, yeah? I don't care what you do after then."
