He let out a slow breath. "Elle... I love you. And I'm... committed to you, and definitely want to make this work." He paused. "That said...." He looked over at her. "Consent... is important to me. And it will continue to be important to me, even after we get engaged or married."
"I... suppose, some of it goes back to Carmen," he said with a shrug. "She was nervous about... a lot, including intimacy. And I know that's not the case with you but... asking for consent just... seems basic. No one should ever just be... assuming stuff when it comes to sex. That... doesn't seem right." He looked at her, frowning slightly. "I mean... doesn't that make sense?"
He shook his head. "I don't see it that way at all. I think that there should be more communication before, during and after sex than... almost anything else, because of the nature of how intimate it is." He smiled just a bit. "Besides, you don't think telling me what you want isn't just a little bit of a turn on?"
He took Elle's hands in her own and looked at her, smiling softly. "Elle... I'm not very good at speech making. Which is why I wrote out everything in those letters. You are... brave. And beautiful. And kind and..." He let out a slow breath, trying to get rid of some of his nerves. "I don't want to start next year as... just boyfriend and girlfriend." He moved away from her just a bit as he pulled a box out of his pocket and dropped down to one knee. "Elle Dane... will you marry me?" he asked as he opened the box.
He frowned. "Okay. That... seems a bit odd that it would be so... heavily bent on you. Is there anything I can do to... help you? Emotionally or... otherwise? I don't want you to feel like you're... a problem or anything."
"It could be. I'm not married to the idea, but if it works, it works." He shrugged. "There's also traditions of naming boys after Biblical figures, and giving girls names that are virtues or whatever. I'm certainly not invested in either of those traditions."
He considered and shook his head. "No. I don't think I ever really... thought about what I'd name my kids growing up. But... I guess something with a B could be kind of cute? With Bagman? Bella or Beth or... something?"
