Some four and half miles from the Rookery per se, one might stumble across the Puisseat, if one had made the whole journey with a blindfold firmly in place. An extinct volcano, is it a magnet for various powers. Numerous spirits are drawn to it, as are wizards and magic wielders of many kinds. It has access, of a limited kind, to the magics of the Dreamtime, and therefore exists in multiple layers of reality simultaneously.
It acts as a sort of lens for non-wizard magic, bringing them into a type of focus which makes them more comprehensible to wand wielders, and more compatible with their magic. To what extent it is a natural phenomenon is not, at present, entirely clear. The single obvious pathway up its southern flank is generally referred to by the family as the Puisseat Pursuit. Arcturus I appears to have spent a considerable amount of time up here, and, indeed Arcturus (II) uncovered evidence that here is in point of fact where he died. Arcturus I's notes on the Secret Serpents suggest this was a key location for them, and records interactions with spirits and dreams alike.
Unbeknownst to all save the eldest sons of the Rookou line, the Puisseat contains a warren of chambers, mainly overlapping in this dimension, or extruding into others. They focus, or even semi-harness, a range of magics, primiarily those of spirits and the Dreamtime. It may be that the descendants of the Secret Serpents share in this knowledge.
She'd decided to give her first attempt at Norman's transformation potion a try. She'd discovered this place a while back, but never really gotten to explore it, though she'd definitely felt the magical power of the place. She'd given it a through look before pulling out the potion, wondering what else she could discover about the place through the senses of an animal. Given that she could turn into a large cat at will, she'd decided on a dog since it's senses would be close enough for her to have a good understanding of and different enough to maybe help her find out something more about the place.
She found the effects of the potion interesting...much like when she'd been transfigured into an animal when first learning to be an animagi. Using her much amplified nose she'd begin to sniff around trying to discern the smells into different categories...ones that mattered and ones that didn't. There were a lot of smells...some almost overpowering in their strength and others so subtle she'd only get whiffs occasionally. There was something magically powerful here...she'd seen it's effects on the local flora and fauna and she wanted to know what it was and what exactly it was doing. One smell would catch her attention...it smelled vaguely...human? She highly doubted anyone else would be out here...so many people were the cause of the magical forces going on here. Maybe at some point in the past they'd done something here and the effects had lasted and lingered, morphing and changing. She'd follow the scent wondering what she'd find.

*She emerges from the scrub, hackles almost visibly raised, and spots the dog, then stiffens, looking for its owner. A moment, and a deep breath, brings a familiar scent, and her shoulders drop back and down, her whole posture relaxing near instantaneously.* "So, you took my advice, I see."
She'd move forward and cautiously sniff at the hand, double checking. After a moment she'd take a step back, her tongue lolling out again. She'd sit, clearly trying to figure out how to communicate, then let out a little sigh of air and lay down on the ground to wait.
About five minutes later her potion would wear off and she'd get up off the ground not bothering to brush the dirt off. She'd clearly taken the Professor's advice, her hair looking unwashed and no artificial scents coming from her. She didn't necessarily smell bad...but it was definitely a more natural smell than most people had given most modern soaps and shampoos. She was wearing more hardy clothes of the local variety in non-descript browns and tans that could easily blend in, and that offered decent protection for her arms and legs. She'd offer the Professor a smile. "Hello again Professor...I'm surprised to see you here."

*As both her inclination and training dictated, Sarah maintained the squat until Melinda had taken a moment to orient herself post transformation. She then rises, more creakily than she would like, to her full height, and looks the younger woman in the eye, seeking assurances of her own.* "Ditto, dear girl. This, as I'm sure you've noticed, is a place of grounded, ancient power and what that does, well, let's just say if you're looking for magical creatures, it's hard to imagine a better starting place. *She sniffs, then grins again.* Nice to know you've got your scent back. It wasn't all there as the beagle, but it's unmistakable now. So, have you taken any other forms for a spin?"
She'd shake her head. "No, this was my first attempt at the potion. It didn't last as long as it should have...probably the quality of the ingredients...but it worked!" She'd beam. "Anyway, I stumbled across this place a couple months ago and never got to come back and explore properly until now. Whatever magical influence is over this place really seems to be influencing the local wildlife...plants and animals, both magical and not."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 04:29, June 30, 2017 (UTC)
*The grin is as jagged and edged as it has been of late.* "It's a pretty big 'whatever'. Did you talk to the ex-Minister before you came? You do know this is Rookwood, or more accurately, Rookou land, right?"
She'd shake her head. "There weren't any wards or protections up that I could find...so I assumed it was just unclaimed territory of some sort."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 13:22, June 30, 2017 (UTC)
"Yeah, Rookwood tore all those down. Apparently this place used to boil the blood of anyone less than a Pure-Blood - not the way I plan to go, for sure. So, it's called - pretentiousness alert - the Puisseat, as in 'power' in the Franco-Latin tradition, and 'seat'. It's what some writers in aboriginal magics call a 'touchpoint', a confluence of dimensions."
She'd pause, trying to figure out what that meant. "So...it's a magically strong location...and nobody knows why or exactly what it does."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 13:47, June 30, 2017 (UTC)
"Yes, but also it affects our magic, Centaur magic, House elf magic all differently from one another, and also its effects vary depending on the alignment of the dimensions, and which is dominant etc.. Look, you've seen in Muggle Studies those things called 'Magic 8 Balls', right? Well, it's like that for real magic."
She'd wait patiently, letting her put her thought together.

*The sigh is de profundis, the set of the shoulders bespeaks an unwelcome shift in the tide, and an uncertain future.* "As I believe I said in Alaska, there are lingering issues for me from ... Juliya's abrupt departure. Well, dragons are notoriously spell-resistant, and I sort of had it in mind to use this place as a testing ground for certain - steps I might take."
She has her suspicions based on the Professor's change in body language...but asks anyway. "What sort of spells? Spells to protect her and her dragonlings as they grow?"
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 17:45, June 30, 2017 (UTC)
"Not really." *she takes a moment, blows out her cheeks, then sets the pendant spinning. Her gestures are snappy, fraught, and the tone of the words matches this perturbation.* "Let's stop beating around the bush, okay? Juliya hurt me, really hurt me, and I'm giving serious thought to returning the favour. But you don't just tackle a Ukrainian Ironbelly, even just one, head-on, so ... I was experimenting with some plane-shifting spells that could, maybe, isolate her, from her brood and from this plane, which powers most of her special abilities."
She'd nod slowly, taking all that in. "That's...a rather ingenious plan honestly. Dragons are...not an easy challenge to tackle, even with the best laid plans." She'd pause. "I...understand how you feel. For a while...when Princess left...there was a part of me that wanted to...hurt her too."
OOC: I actually wrote out a short...story? RP? ...something about it if you'd like to read it. There's still parts that need revamped or re-written...but maybe you'll find it interesting.

*She snaps - in every sense.* "It's not the same thing, you stupid girl! We were, in every sense but the final, lovers. I was on the point of taking a dangerous Animagus variant potion to give me - permanently - a dragon form. A male dragon, no less, because Juliya said she couldn't be with another female of her kind. I was - oh, hell, what's the point?!"
Her voice would be calm and quiet. "...what happened? Why didn't you go through with it?" She needed to understand to have any hope of helping.
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 18:04, June 30, 2017 (UTC)
*How the hell would I know? She got a 'feeling' her brood needed her, and took off for Romania, telling me only that she was expecting to stay there - permanently. I was teaching at the castle - I couldn't just pull up stumps and follow her. besides, there were all my other - companions to think of. Who was going to give them a home, at least one they'd want, if I just vanished? So, I stayed ... and I guess you could say, surprise, surprise, I brooded."
She'd nod. "So...have you talked with her since? Why couldn't you go join her now?"
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 18:11, June 30, 2017 (UTC)
"Because in the year and change since her desertion I've come to want to kill the bitch, and in my more lucid moments, even I know that couldn't end well. If by some miracle I managed, a flying phalanx of Ironbellies would be hunting me all my days, always assuming I didn't top myself out of guilt. So, I was - playing it out, so to speak, looking to iron out the wrinkles in my plan, and hoping against hope that at some magical instant, the repeated fantasy would suddenly be enough, and I could put it behind me, and go on with my life - such as it is."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 22:50, June 30, 2017 (UTC)
*She laughs - a short, harsh bark breaking out of a bewildered expression.* "How? Why would you think you can? Why would you want to? I mean, in case it's not clear already, I struggle with people. Working, understanding, I mean. It's not, well, natural for me, for want of a better term. It's why animals and I get on so well."
She'd nod. "I do understand that. That being said...you outlined the difficulty rather well. You can't deny that having help would benefit you, even if it is with another person. Doing this on your own you'll probably just get yourself killed."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 01:57, July 1, 2017 (UTC)
*Her face and her silence are both exceptionally eloquent on the concept that this particular point hadn't previously struck her.*
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 17:31, July 2, 2017 (UTC)
*She shakes off her torpor at last, and shrugs disconsolately.* "Like I said before, probably not thought this through fully. So, what's your bright idea, Wonder Girl?"
She'd chuckle at the title. "Well...there certainly are spells that affect dragons...and you know Julia better than anyone. Tell me about her...what are her strengths and weaknesses?"
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 13:53, July 5, 2017 (UTC)
*The smile is a drained, momentary lip flexion, a ripple vanished in its making.* "Forgive the cliche, but the only 'weakness' I was concerned with was that for humans, one in particular. She was more - aware of wand magic than any other magical creature I've known, inclined to see it as having potential, rather than being simply a crutch for the inadequacy of humans in challenging their - to them - paltry inner power. She, I believed, liked the idea of a symbiosis, a partnership between wand and wielder. Juliya lived in the moment to a vast degree for a creature as long-lived and powerful as an Ironbelly, and during her time around Hogwarts she collected experiences, looking actively for the new. I guess, maybe, that's what ran out for her - truly original moments." *The last fades, as Sarah slumps with the realization that it may, in fact, be over.*
She'd nod slowly. "I see...and how far was she into her life? I mean...she's obviously old enough to have dragonlings, but I don't get the sense she's ancient by any means...meaning she'd have a lot of her life left to live still...assuming nothing happened."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 14:44, July 5, 2017 (UTC)
"I've never met another creature, apart from humans, that actually counted the years or even seasons. She was old enough to have memories of a previous brood, but she never mentioned more than the one, so I always assumed she was a young-ish adult, which, given their observed lifespan, could be anything between about twenty-five and seventy-five years old. The oldest female of which I found records in the Ukraine was supposedly over five hundred years old at the time of her death, and was killed defending her brood, so ...."
She'd nod, and notice the shudder. "Sure...but can you imagine thriving on new experiences then...having done everything and still having that long to...linger? Maybe the most cruel thing you could do would to be just leave her alone as is...to linger. Death in the excitement of battle might be a mercy in the long run."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 15:57, July 5, 2017 (UTC)
"I've never believed that stepping into animals' bodies gave me unfettered access to their minds and mindsets. Dragons - as far as I can tell - are built differently from humans ... from the sky down, I guess you might say. When they procreate, it's the breaking of a thunderstorm, the howling of a typhoon, just an unleashing of energies too long pent up. I don't think they have a racial sense of survival, well, Juliya might actually, but in general ... anyway, I don't believe it's to keep the species going, not given how many of them eat their young, females as well as males, it's just - the demands of the moment. Have you ever read 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck?"
She'd nod and smile. "It's one of my sister's favorite books."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 22:26, July 5, 2017 (UTC)
"Well, like George, I feel we're responsible for what we send and leave out in the world, and sometimes, when we're too slow picking up that duty the steps to put things right are - extreme. Still, since Juliya has chosen a life away from me, maybe I need to respect that, and not see trouble where it is only ... potential."
She'd give a nod. "Maybe that's for the best." She'd glance around. "SO...you started explaining about this place but...we got off on another topic. What's the cause of the...strange magic here?"
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 15:16, July 6, 2017 (UTC)
"Never actually got around to talking it over with Draco, but from what I can see, and given the essential geological nature of the Highlands, it appears to be an extinct volcano - there's no sign of activity for at the very least hundreds of thousands of years, don't worry. Everything in this part of the world has been calm, that way, far beyond the scope of human history. So back when the wild magics were loose, and every night was party night around here, I assume something powerful got the 'fly in amber' treatment, and the result was that reality, and especially magic, in the area is subject to - shearing forces."
She'd nod. "I can feel it, and could even more so in animal form. So...you think it's some sort of...trapped demi-god or something equally magically powerful?" She'd smile at her joke...then realize that realistically that had to actually be close to the truth. "It would have to be something...elemental and extremely powerful if this magical aura is basically it's...body heat. I didn't think magical beings that powerful actually existed."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 15:36, July 6, 2017 (UTC)
*The pendant gets her focus - at least through the first sentence.* "They don't ... but they did. When I say 'fly in amber', I don't mean in a 'Prometheus stretched out on a rock getting daily vulture appendectomies' way - in fact, I'm not sure there are words to describe it. I think it may be something like if we got 'caught' in a drawing, and were frustratingly limited to two dimensions while knowing the third existed, and could solve 99% of our problems."
She'd process that for a few moments. "So...you think it's more likely some sort of...natural force, possibly from a dimension we can't...interact with or really understand...that's making this?" She'd pause. "...and what do you mean they did? Like...demi-gods and such did exist, or other magical beings? ...and if they did exist...what happened?"
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 15:48, July 6, 2017 (UTC)
"I imagine they moved on to better feeding grounds, once Muggles spread and stopped worshipping them in numbers. I don't think it's 'here' exactly, more tied to here - a remnant or relict if you will, pulling it back on a 'regular' basis. Yeah, I know, hardly clear, but as someone once observed, 'It’s very hard to talk quantum using a language originally designed to tell other monkeys where the ripe fruit is'."
She'd chuckle at that. "Yeah...I suppose so." She'd fall silent for a moment, trying to put her question together. "So...do you think they could...or would come back? Some...creature or beast that had overwhelming magical power? Do you think we could...find something like that to study or...try to understand?" She'd pause. "There's no shortage of stories of wizards or muggles fighting against or imprisoning those types of creatures."
Sarah NormanDurmstrang/Salem/Hogwarts -"How do you find the facts when memory becomes a dream?" – 16:01, July 6, 2017 (UTC)
*The face clouds over.* "I think we're talking about wild, primal magics, the sort that use you far more than you could ever wield them. I don't believe they fit entirely into the dimensions we can perceive or understand, so trying deliberately to take them on could be the most protracted, painful suicide ever attempted. I personally feel 'heroes' and such were just ridiculously lucky mortals who happened to be there when a confluence of events took place that - neutralized an ancient power. And we don't hear about the other side because, well, those observers weren't so lucky."
She'd nod slowly, her mind clearly still whirling on the idea. She liked the thought of being a hero. She liked the concept of there being powerful magical beasts and beings to study and learn more about. She liked the idea of something ancient and evil rising from it's imprisonment and her already knowing things about it, or how to deal with it. Maybe none of the fantasies were realistic...but that's why they were fantasies after all.
