This English country manor, set in 4,800 acres of its own lands in the wilds of Shropshire, has been home to generations of the Rookou family for at least five centuries that they know of. There is even evidence of an earlier, smaller dwelling on the site, which may well have also belonged to ancestors of the current Lord of the Manor.
Arcturus Rookou lived here with his wife, Tulula Rookou-Greengrass, and daughter, Caecey Rookou-Greengrass, in a monument to compounded folly and arrogance which is, somewhat ironically, only sustained by that selfsame arrogance, since Arcturus had frittered away a considerable portion of the family fortune in pursuit of his "dream" - absolute Pure-Blood supremacy, and a magical-chemical means of preventing Mudbloods, or even Half-Bloods, from accessing their talents. Several other family members have moved back, and, indeed, seem to be coming out of the (rather ornate and expensive) woodwork.
This is a massive, sprawling edifice, with three active and one sealed wing protruding from the body of the building, which itself was redesigned in the 19th century in imitation of Apsley House, but pointlessly made even larger, stretching some 140 yards from end to end. There are therefore literally miles of corridors down which the overworked house elves must Apparate in search of whichever family member demanded their instant attention. However, to ensure that the Apsley parallel was not lost on any fortunate enough to be allowed in sight, there is a permanent masking illusion in place, hiding the wings, and reducing the main body to exact original dimensions. Only wand wielders of exceptional power will be able to penetrate the disguise.
Equally to exceed Apsley, there are five floors, plus basements and cellars, and in all probability no one in the family in the last century has, in their lifetime, set foot in every place in the building. The poor, put-upon staff have, of course, but in the eyes of the family that definitely doesn't count, and they would be appalled at its being mentioned in the same context.
All the standards of a country seat have been included, even a ridiculously valuable art collection which no one ever bothers to look at, and a set of stables, the occupants of which have been ignored for so long they have practically evolved into a tribe of their own. One Ministry wag in the 1950s, sent to investigate a report of Muggle baiting, even suggested that this was the original home of Centaurs.
Lavish, opulent and palatial are words which can be used about almost every element of the residence, but then, for the less generous, so are overstated, gaudy and even nouveau riche. The Grounds stretch as far as the eye can see in every direction, and encompass the Gardens, Quidditch Pitch and the Puisseat. There are numerous water features, including the Waterfall Cavern (in which resided Adera Rookou), which was, until recently, not much fun for non-family members.
Draco Rookwood is giving intermittent thought to reviving the old place once again, although he has yet to find the singular motivation that would spark noticeable action on his part.
*In defiance of every expectation and with Hebath practically in orbit around him in the House elf's current state of distress, Draco is hand-scrubbing his own front step, removing every residue of the 'Purebloods Welcome' mat which sat here for generations.*

*The old House Elf has largely made his peace with the constant flow (i.e. two a month, average) of visitors, but still cannot get the - Master Draco to sit and be waited upon. He caught him making his own tea, Muggle fashion, last Saturday.*

*The door creaks back a fraction, and two reddened eyes regard the new arrival. Hebath has learned, by experience, that Master Draco is - somewhat indiscriminate in his choice of guests, and nothing and no one can be safely dismissed, or chased off the premises.* "*Yes, Madam. How may I serve?"

"Master Draco is, to the best of my knowledge, within. Whom shall I say is calling?"

*The door finally opens fully, revealing the main staircase in all its grandiose splendour.* "Please enter, Madam Ellis, and if you would be so good as to await here, I shall inform t- Master Draco." *He Disapparates.*
*To the House elf* "OK, for the *quick calculation* twenty-third time, I'm Draco. *Sees the face crumple* Master Draco, if you absolutely must. I can open my own door." *To Jade.* "Do you mind if he shows you through? I'm just finishing something up, and I need ... maybe three minutes."

*With a bow that practically scrapes his nose on the ground.* "If Madam would care to follow me, I shall show you into the - Master Draco's receiving quarters." *He sets off at a pace that it is clear nothing short of an earthquake is going to speed up, heading for the Billiards Room.*
