Joseph sat at the far end of the chamber. His hands were shackled tightly to the wall, still seeping blood from the sharp cuffs. His legs were straight, his ankles shackled to the ground. His robes were dull and shabby. He had not eaten since the day he was captured, and had been given barely a cup of stale water every couple nights. His hunger and thirst had dangerously weakened his body, and the sharp pangs of his stomach sometimes consumed him with pain. His face was pale, but his eyes had not completely lost their life.
Joseph looked at his brother, feeling nothing but tiredness. "No. You stood in my way. You knew my dream, and your actions crushed it." He lifted his head higher. "You're insane. You are incapable of compromise or rational discussion, let alone persuasion. In short, you have changed. Therefore, there is no point in continuing this conversation."
Joseph took a deep breath. He could dodge, he would be quick enough. But he was weak from hunger and defenseless, and he knew it. No matter what Joseph did, James would corner him in the end. But Joseph would not die whimpering like a scared child, or glaring like a stubborn rule-breaker. He would die with as much dignity as he could muster. He sat up properly with his shoulders back and looked directly in James's crazed eyes. Forgive me, Krysalis.
