History
The arrangement worked out perfectly for both societies; whilst both monarchies were separate, the two worked closely to ensure similar values were shared and upheld. When the muggle monarchy changed their house name to Windsor, the magical monarchy followed suit. Everything was harmonious until the ascension of King Henry II. A monarch who wanted to devolve the power of the Ministry itself, Henry became tyrannous early on in his reign. Turmoil that threatened to overthrow the monarchy rose again, saved only by the forced abdication of Henry and the replacement by his eldest daughter, Victoria.
Proving to be the saving grace of House Windsor, Queen Victoria remedied her father's mistakes. She appealed to all crowds of magical life; advocating for no discrimination for species, being proud enough of her pure-blooded heritage to satisfy those who cared whilst remaining completely relatable for all. Her reign, still going strong, has remained among the most harmonious and popular since the magical monarchy's establishment.
Sophia's mother, Vivianne, the third child of Victoria and as she grew older, it was clear that she was the wild one out of the batch. As young as eleven, she broke traditions through insisting on being sent to Beauxbatons and continuously got into mischief during her years as a student. After graduating, it became clear that Vivianne was the more extravagant than her siblings, becoming known as a night owl due to her tendency to party and stay up till dawn. Having felt sidelined a lot of her life and felt the only way she could leave a mark was becoming the outgoing person that would eventually become the persona that her second daughter, Sophia, would try to imitate decades later.
She met her husband through interviews. Henry was a reporter who constantly found himself near Vivianne, taking photos, and the often struck up small conversations each time they brushed past each other. Eventually, Vivianne was the one to ask him out on a date and, as they say, the rest was history. Of course, as Henry came from an old family line, he was easily accepted into the royal family and it was probably the least scandalous thing Vivienne had done so far. Though she was still known to be the least traditional, Vivianne was soon producing offspring and settling into being a mother. Sophia was the second child of hers, with Octavius being the eldest and Estelle the youngest. Growing up, Sophia was a sweet child. In private, she was loud and loved to be around her numerous cousins but became more shy, reserved and cautious whenever she was in the public. She was homeschool, deciding not to go to a primary school, and preferred to keep only to her siblings and cousins.
Her first magical incident when she was eight years old occurred just before a royal event. She was getting dressed and, throwing a tantrum, caused clothes to fly around the room. Though Vivianne tried to suggest sending Sophia to France in three years, it was Sophia who decided to go to Hogwarts, wanting to be near her family rather than be alone, though she decided this when she was ten, two years later. During those two years, Sophia began to be attracted to linguistics. A strange hobby to have as a child but it's what she did. Though she'd known more than one language since she was three years old, she began to learn French, Italian and even Chinese and was somewhat fluent by the time she was ten years old. She also boasted an affinity to the piano, the cello and the violin, though she would rarely touch any instrument as she grew older.
She was sorted into Gryffindor when she went to Hogwarts and for the first two years, she was okay. She was constantly surrounded by both her cousins and other people, always wanting to become closely associated with the royal family. However, though she never told anyone of this, she was struggling under the public eye, constantly watching everything she was doing and saying. By the time she reached her fourth year, she was trying to become perfect. A perfect body, perfect grades, perfect personality. Perfect life. She was controlling every aspect, from what she ate to who she was seen with. She remembered falling in love with a girl but cut the girl off when she realised the girl wasn't handling the pressure of being around her society. This somewhat succeeded for the next two years, but she would later describe herself as a piece of elastic being pulled and pulled, waiting to be let go and snap. However, due to this, she raised the ladder in the academic sphere, becoming one of the best students in Hogwarts and had perfect grades, though she found herself incredibly talented in both charms and potions.
It was in her fourth year, she began to move to become an animagus, getting a private tutor to help her through the process. In the middle of her fifth year, she was able to transform into a small, black cat. This would later be incredibly useful when she wanted to sneak out of situations and buildings. As she wasn't too open to the people around her that she was able to do this, though she did tell her cousins, she was able to move around the public eye and the media, though she stupidly didn't think of this until years later.
It was in her sixth year that she finally did snap. Sophia wasn't sure what caused it, maybe it was the one bad grade that unravelled everything that she worked for, or maybe it was being criticised in one article in the daily prophet. Whatever it was, it caused Sophia to implode. She pulled away from everyone. Her siblings, cousins, parents, everyone. She withdrew from the public eye and was rarely seen outside of Hogwarts. She began to lose sleep and only went to class to make sure none of the teachers would raise any alarm bells to her parents. For a year and a half, she was cruel and pessimistic to the people around her, isolating herself. She could go into more detail but those years were a blur to her, even in the current day. Fuzzy and uneven. Broken memories spilling into her head at night. Before, she always felt imperfect, not good enough, that she needed to be better, but then she just stopped caring. Like a switch. For everyone, the world, herself, her future. Everything. She knew, when she was found unconscious on her bathroom floor, that she was hospitalised (though this was kept heavily under wraps), severely underweight and had been slowly killing herself. Like the past year or so, her months in hospital was a blur to Sophia.
She went through months of recovery and afterwards she decided not to return to Hogwarts to finish her final year. The public was told she was homeschooled instead. Though she was now aware and slowly snapping herself out of the mindset that she had been in, she never truly recovered. She began to eat again, stop being so restrictive and controlling over what she was doing, she began to talk to her family again and stopped pushing them away. It was a slow path and went through intensive therapy. However, the feeling of loneliness and not being good enough haunted Sophia still. For a year, she began to get more involved, contributing to charities, helping them where she could, performing any royal duties that she needed to do.
However, it was when she was eighteen did everything turn upside down. It was a stupid one night stand with a man who was very much taken. Not to mention the age difference. Sophia had known him briefly and it was giving in to her own attraction that it happened. Sophia could blame it on alcohol but she had barely finished a glass of wine that night. Three months later, that mistake caught up to her. Sophia was pregnant. She didn't tell anyone, not even the father. There were many reasons why Sophia didn't want to tell her family about the child. For once, she was unmarried. Two, the father was now engaged to be married to someone else. Not knowing what else to do, Sophia fled deep into Europe to have the child. She ended up giving birth in Rome with the intention of giving her up for adoption. Princess Casey Harlow River of Windsor. That was to be her name and title. Sophia had a few months with her baby before she was taken away. Sophia remembered Casey cried–a lot. Sophia could barely calm her down. It often drove Sophia's head in and was often sleep deprived. When the time came, Sophia remembers the woman walking away with the baby girl and Sophia still isn't sure if she made the right decision.
Afterwards, Sophia returned to England, with the intention of returning to her family who she had barely spoken to in the past year. However, that never quite turned out. Feeling lost and hopeless, Sophia felt as if she didn't deserve her family after giving up Casey. She was in some muggle section of London when she heard someone advocating the military. Sophia wasn't sure why she enrolled. Maybe she would die in battle and end her misery. Give her something else to think about. Another purpose instead of wallowing away in her guilt.
She spent two years in the military. First she was in the infantry but eventually switched to the air force. She was deployed to different areas constantly but she found herself rising through the ranks with ease. She was squadron lieutenant when she left. The stress of war and military had gotten to her and had been diagnosed with PTSD. Sophia, even years after, constantly wakes up in a sweat after nightmares of bombs and bullets, though she handles it through physical activity and has it under control. Having begun to build her life around the military, being honourably discharged came as a shock to Sophia and felt as lost as she felt years ago. Not knowing what else to do, she returned to the royal life. She told her family she was travelling before she left and didn't dare tell them what she really did. She would have been happy to never return.
Her third chance with the royal life, she's tried to imitate her mother's path and how she handled it. She built herself as a socialite, constantly moving from party to party. At first, it was just to find her niche in the family but she soon found herself enjoying it anyway. She soon began to become prominent in the media as her antiques became well known. One can usually find Sophia at a party or at some sort of musical event, whether it be a small band in a pub or at a large festival. Though not well known as her cousins, she's known well enough to often cause quite a scandal, especially as the daughter of Vivianne. She's learnt not to care for what they say about her and tends to do what she wants regardless. Another thing she did, though, was hire her own private guard. Well, one. It was a spur of the moment thing but part of her wanted to make sure that the one who was going to be around her constantly wasn't connected to the family. She didn't need the guard telling the family about her PTSD.
Personality Sophia, though she acts like she doesn't care for the royal life, can be very politically savvy when she wants to be. She keeps herself aware of what is happening around her and often dumbs down what she knows, for the sake of appearing aloof. She's the type of person who can get anything done if she puts her mind to it but there is surprisingly little that actually causes Sophia to truly snap into action. The military was the first event that pulled it out. She found herself able to take control of the people around her with ease, a leader of sorts, and this was a great asset of hers that helped her raise through the ranks. However, most of the time, she's impassive save for a few witty remarks and can often shrug off the people around her. Once she cared too much about her position in the world but now she acts almost flippant to it. Despite this, she still acts regal, though sometimes she exaggerates this trait to either mock the people around her or to tease outsiders. Almost bored by royalty, she is often called aloof and brash. She doesn't have the same responsibilities as her cousins, though a part of her wishes she did, as at least she would have something to do with her mind. However, she decided when she left the military to make the most of the free reign that she's been given as twelfth in line. So she's been sneaking out to parties, drinks a lot, and has a habit of smoking weed (don't tell her grandmother) though this is more for the kicks and she doesn't take it out of her night outs. She tells anyone who asks that she can stop it anytime and, unlike for most, this is actually true. She has a sharp tongue, too, and uses it whenever she's in a mood, most often the mood is boredom, and often doesn't care if she offends the other person, though most of the time she doesn't mean half of what she says. She's often called a character and can be the life of the party when she wants to be. She has a certain level of contempt to traditions now, though she didn't use to be like this, and is often known to (metaphorically, of course) give nothing but the finger whenever someone suggests she follows it. She prefers to live by her own rules, even if it means going against royal protocol. However, even though she is a wild card with the royals, she is still involved, leading charity events and taking up other royal responsibilities when needed. It gives her something to do with her time. In other words, Sophia can often just be bored and is looking for a release. |
