Penbury Hall
home of the Baudelaire Family.

Baudelaire country house

Penbury Hall is an Edwardian Stately Home, in the Wizarding Village of Penbury, in Scotland. The home has been occupied by many affluent wizarding families, and currently, it serves as the residence for the Baudelaire Family. Occasionally, they may be found in their Belgravia Home, but there is little space there, so this is the permanent residence. It's only a few miles away from Hogsmeade, so the kids are always able to visit during weekends in term time.

Mirabelle and Adelaide

Mirabelle

"Don't be silly. Everyone wants this. Everyone wants to be us."
  Message Me Find Me

Mirabelle's just had to send off three angry owls to different writers who still haven't submitted their pieces for the next issue. She sighs, and wonders why exactly she hasn't retired yet, before sitting back down on a desk to edit the articles she does have.

There's a sudden flash, and a beat later Adelaide appears, something akin to amusement on her face. "And here we have the wonderful editor-in-chief of Witch Weekly, in her natural habitat, wondering what she's still doing working when she could be lounging in an island in the Caribbean and enjoying her rights as a Senior Citizen," she drawls, as she looks down at her camera, observing the picture just taken. "I hear Senior Citizens get all kinds of discounts and privileges over there."

She takes off her reading glasses and places them onto the desk she's working on, "Call me a senior citizen again, and you won't ever see your inheritance." She says, unable to surpress a smile. "Come now, you're not going to give your mamé a hug?" She asks, stretching out her arms. "How have you been, cherie?"

"But you're the most beautiful senior citizen I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, grandmère," Adelaide slips the camera from around her neck. She approaches her, hugging her closely. "I've been good. Hogwarts is beautiful, especially around this time of the year. It makes for beautiful pictures, and an even better distraction after... well, a change of pace from the usual family pictures."

She chuckles. "Your smart mouth is a trait you inherit from your mother, who inherited it from me." She reminds her, placing a hand on her cheek. "I imagine so. When you get the photos processed, send them to me, so I can brag to my friends about you. You know that old Martha Kingsbury woman is always trying to one-up me. I hate her." She says, before realising that Adelaide was talking about Charlemagne. She sighs, "It does feel like a whirlwind, doesn't it? Us having to move on and continue with work. How are you holding up?"

"It's having a smart mouth that takes you places," she points out. As she continues speaking, Adelaide smirks, priding herself in the fact that her skills in the arts of photography are recognized, valued, and worthy of being proud of. She rolls her eyes, though, because , "The Kingsbury family doesn't compare to our own. We're the Baudelaires. Everyone wants to be us," Pausing, she considers the last question, and shrugs. "I mean, it's not like he was very present, to begin with, but... I don't know. It's just weird to know that he's gone. That things really are going to be different from here on out."

"You're right. About both of those things." She says, putting her glasses back on, but looking at Adelaide through the bridge of her nose, rather than with the glasses, giving her a sort-of stern expression. "I fear that Charlemagne's passing will put us through a test, as a family. And we Baudelaire ladies will do what we have done best. We fight on." She explains.

At that moment, the resemblance between Olympé and Mirabelle was uncanny. She has to blink to make sure she isn't talking to her mother instead. "Still not an idea who will take over?"

She chuckles. "Your uncle was always terrible at sorting out his own personal affairs. It could be anyone. Céline, because she's his wife, Olympe or Cyril, because they're his siblings. It could go to Philippe, it could go to Laverne." She explains, "They're all frontrunners. I imagine, the board of directors will possibly appoint someone to take the reigns permanently." She pauses, "But my bet is probably Philippe. Your mother wouldn't be best pleased."

"She most certainly wouldn't, and I think I could name others who'd take to it just as badly," Adelaide says. She takes an open seat, staring ahead at her grandmother amusedly. "Luckily my worries are reserved for taking over Hogwarts' student body and making sure I'm the best photographer around," she pauses, a grin coming onto her face. "And that I remain your favorite grandchild. I mean, it shouldn't be difficult. We all know I'm the gifted one, after all."

She smiles, almost proudly, at Adelaide. "Of course. Right now, the only thing you need to think about is what mark you're going to leave on Hogwarts, and how you'll do it." She explains, gesturing at the camera. "I think that your talents may be able to propel you into getting there." She says wisely, with a wink. "And we grandparents are not allowed to choose favourites. However, if I did have to say which of you was cut from the cloth closest to me, it would obviously be clever Adelaide, non?"

"By blackmail, obviously. The climb to the top is just a matter of being the best and owning everyone else," she says, jokingly, even though she's partially serious. Hey, it'd be a short way up. She lifts her camera, and flashes her a grin. "Come on, continue what you were doing before I disturbed you. Let's get a power shot."

She chuckles, turning to her desk, and pushing her glasses further up her nose, before picking up her quill. "Of course, it is a faster route. But you run the risk of making enemies that way. How would you deal with that?" She asks, as she pretends to sign a letter.

"I rely on my wits. And regardless, nobody would try anything against a Baudelaire," she says, confident despite being a little distracted as she photographs her grandmother. It's careful, calculated, and comes out nicely. "You really do scream powerful," she compliments, as she examines the picture.

She chuckles. "That's the spirit." She looks over. "When can I see it? You know I'm no good with technology and all this." She grumbles, "And you better get used to it, because I'm sure one day it'll become your pose."

"Now, actually. It's an instant thing, you know," she chuckles, standing up and moving over for her to see. The picture is there, in the screen. "My pose? Why, I have a long road ahead of me before I get there, grandmère."

She squints to see it properly, then smiles. "It's very good. But all those wrinkles..." She tuts. "You never know, you may find you need a power-pose sooner than you think. It always hits us when we least expect it."

"You still look marvelous, compared to people younger than you," Adelaide grins. She's thinking of her mother. (Of course she is.) "That sounded ominous; like you know something I don't."

She chuckles at the comment. "Give your mother some credit." She says with a smirk, "You and Lisette were lucky enough to take after your father's looks. Dark hair is such a Baudelaire trait." She comments, sealing an envelope. "Well. Maybe I'm just old but it felt like only yesterday I held you as a baby. Before long, you'll be graduated, working, marrying. Everything feels so fast for me. And Charlemagne's death made me realise just how fast it feels."

"I think I'll worry about my career and making sure the Baudelaire influence doesn't just die out because of inner rivalries and squabbles before I worry about marrying," she says. Truth be told, romance isn't something she's given much thought. Before it was because she just lacked interest, but now, with tensions growing between family members, it just seemed unimportant.

Lisette and Estelle

She was tending to some flowers in the garden, whistling as she pruned some roses. Estelle was going to be visiting over the weekend, so she was excited to catch up with her baby sister.

It was probably obvious that Lisette would be out here, Estelle realised a little too late, after she'd checked nearly everywhere else under the sun on the Penbury estate. And sure enough, her sister was there, green-fingered as always; she could see the serenity in such a habit, but preferred something slightly more active. The tiredness from walking up and down stairs evaporated as she practically flung herself at her sister. "Sis!"

Surprised by the sudden movement and sound, she turns to see her baby sis, "Estelle!" She squeals with excitement and glee, "Oh, ma petité, I'm so glad you're home!" She says, "It's been very quiet without you all recently." She admits, "Tell me everything, catch me up!" She says, holding her by her hands, and gently leading her to the closest garden bench, and sitting down together.
