Hydepark

A light, glinting snow falls slowly from the sky. The street lamps illuminate the walkway. The stars shine brightly above you, the moon casting a pale glow over everything. The grass is blanketed with snow and the sweet, jazzy sounds of music sound throughout the park. The chatter of Muggles in the ice-skating rink are faint as you stroll around the rest of the park.

It's safe to say that the events of the past few days are still freaking him out. He's never been caught down Diagon before, he's never had any reason to worry - it's not like a fellow witch hunter would ever find themselves in such an environment. Or so he thought. And now Mia's blocked him on every social media available and although common sense tells him that she isn't going to grass - of course she won't, it would mean admitting that she's magic, too - it doesn't mean he isn't shit scared. The park is usually Elijah's happy place; summer has allowed London to shed its usual grey cloak and shine in the daylight, every pale surface gleaming and the flowers lining the paths all in bloom. Here and the library are where he feels he can chill out. But now he's just- on edge. What if Mia did tell? What if his co-workers are waiting in an alleyway or a side-street somewhere, ready to turn his own tactics back onto him? Fuck that. The park is busy, bustling with tourists and uni students reading on the grass and picnic-goers, so when Elijah sees an empty bench, he nabs it swiftly, dumping his backpack by his feet and pulling out a book. Dracula. How apt.

School had finished for the summer only a few days prior and she was still staying with one of her old friends before returning home to Whitby. The thought of doing so was taking a toll on her health considering her mother had refused to assist her at the train station, leaving her to a few friends who are surely upset by her looming presence by now. Divya understands her mother isn't too pleased with her, but she thinks she has a lot more to be upset about and the whole ordeal will certainly accumulate into an explosive argument. It always does. Her mind is reeling at the thought, so she had left her friend's home to take a stroll through the city before winding up down here. Her face is gentle seeming and no one would know she was in such turmoil unless they were an expert in reading others. She's rather put together despite her anxieties and is staring across the way before noticing a bench with any empty seat, diverting her attention and quickly falling into the spot. She ignores the boy sitting a few feet away, finding no need to pay him much mind for once as she lets her crossbody purse settle into her lap and pulls out her own copy of Dracula.

Usually, he can zone out pretty effectively in environments like this; it's a little noisy, the way London is always noisy, with the near-constant passing of sirens and the gentle hum of conversation from the passers-by. If he had earphones or could concentrate a little better, it wouldn't be such an issue. But it's not until he's holding the book open that Elijah realises his hands are trembling, still, and the words swim like ink in water on the pages. How is he supposed to think about anything else? All he can see in his head is the look on Mia's face when his magic lashed out, the hurt in her voice- ugh. Whatever. It's actually a good thing that he's so distracted, because if he wasn't, he wouldn't spot the girl who has just sat beside him, nose buried in the same book that he's currently trying to read. That makes him smirk a little. "Snap," he says to her, turning his own book to show the cover.

Despite the buzzing surrounding them, it is impossible to not register that she is being spoken to even if it is as simple as Snap. Her heart skips from the sudden acknowledgement of her existence before she turns and glances towards him only for a brief moment. Her eyes soon fall down towards his hands and the copy of Dracula he has in them. Divya flips her own around, holding it near her chest and smiling as her eyes return towards his. "What do you know?" Everything within her is telling her it's some sort of slight at fate, but she has realized she needs to murder those sorts of thoughts. It harms her more than it does her any good. An arm falls onto the back of the bench as she brings her fingertips to her temple. "Is this your first time reading it?" Her tone is flighty and unassuming because she's read it on multiple occasions. To assume someone else hasn't is foolish, but what's more foolish and assumptive is phrasing it like How many times have you read it? Divya can be pretentious, but she's self-aware too.

If there's one thing Elijah can talk for days about, it's books; more specifically, literature. His entire aesthetic probably gives away his pretentiousness (he's wearing a button-up shirt in summer, for God's sake) but any opportunity to flex that will happily be taken. Call it another character flaw. "I read it when I was still in junior school," he answers, twisting the book around so she can see the signs of its age: dog-eared pages, scuffed corners, the long crack running down its spine. He's never been one for keeping books in pristine condition. "Though I've always preferred Stoker's lesser-known works. The Mystery of the Sea was received just as well, critically-speaking, as Dracula was, but it's been so overshadowed." There is barely an ounce of self-awareness in his tone, at least not as much as in Divya's, though even if Elijah was aware of how condescending he can be, he wouldn't particularly care. Literature is his happy place. It's not like he's allowed to talk about anything personal.

Her hand falls from her temple, fingertips landing on her cupid's bow as she attempts (very poorly) to conceal the smirk that comes to her face. "Junior school? Surely you're the sort to be fun at parties." It's at that moment that she chooses to mentally address his attire. It's a choice certainly, but she doesn't mind it. A boy who is all put together is usually a better one. It's nicer than those horrendous sports shirts. "The Mystery of the Sea better not be what you consider a 'lesser-known' text. Not when he's written Miss Betty or The Watter's Mou'. When is the last you have heard either of those spoken aloud?" In fact, Divya is pretty certain that just then was the first time she had ever heard either of them spoken of either. She has read them both of course, but only because she was bored and her mother's bookshelf is full of Bram Stocker novels. "Anyways, Stoker is decent. Enough so that this poor thing has been reread one too many times." Her own copy is in visible shambles. By now, she has learned how to charm it to its full potential once more, but she believes it's nicer this way - scribbled annotations included. She wouldn't want to lose those.

The response makes him quirk an eyebrow, intrigued; he has read the titles that she mentions, albeit a long time ago and with burning disappointment after the masterpiece that is Dracula. What can he say? The classics are classic for a reason. "Those novels haven't been referenced for years because they're so incredibly mediocre. Though Dracula hardly stands out as particularly impressive, compared to other works of its era." Her copy of the book is in an even worse state than his, which is mildly comforting but also irrationally sparks his competitive side. "Compared to Dorian Gray or The Sorrows of Satan, it barely holds up." A quick glance back to his own confirms that yes, the words still don't compute in his head, so Elijah sighs quietly and places the book aside, into the gap between them on the bench. "Or, at least, in my opinion. My English teacher would probably be offended if he heard all that just now."

Her shoulders rise and fall with a bit of dramatic flair as she glances to the side, taking note of a child chasing after some city birds. Her eyes return towards his as they narrow ever so slightly. "Well, yes, of course they are mediocre or they probably would have earned more recognition. The same could be said for The Mystery of the Sea by some critics, no?" And although she has taken to it, she could say with certainty that it isn't everything. Most novels aren't everything though. Divya has never found the perfect one - the one to resort to at all times. "Dorian Gray is a more interesting read to me. I prefer the subject matter and the imagery far more. It's simply that Dracula is a much easier read after all of these times spent with it. It's a much better park read than grabbing something fresh off of the shelves." She won't admit that The Sorrows of Satan isn't in her library. Maybe she can convince Mia to go with her to the library or she can stop by on own on her way to her apartment. "Anyway, English teachers don't know any more than we do. Half of them have no idea what's at their fingertips and assume one man's interpretation from a century ago must be correct simply because they cannot understand it themselves as if literature isn't more complicated than that. Or, in most instances, there isn't anything there to be read into in the first place and they spew bogus."

"Mystery of the Sea received the same level of critical acclaim as Dracula, but only one achieved canon status," he counters, more immersed in the conversation that he had been previous; if only the other knuckle-draggers in his English Literature class could bring a similar level of intellect to lessons. It'd make third period a lot more bearable. "They're similar in tone and genre. What makes Dracula so special? The vampiric element?" It does occur to him there that Stoker more than likely knew a real vampire to write such an accurate description of one, at least from what Elijah's heard. He's never met a vampire in the flesh but the witch hunters have told him plenty. "Teachers are inescapably biased, and they never want to admit that interpretations can be flat-out incorrect. Criticism can be nuanced and particular but there is such a thing as grasping at straws." His eyes turn back to her then, drawn away from the gang of school-age kids on skateboards rattling past like a tornado, and a chord of recognition strikes. Small, but definitely there. Is she from sixth-form? "Have we met before?" he asks, brow pinched in thought as he tries to ignore the way his stomach drops - God, hopefully she wasn't in Diagon. That'd be the end of this conversation in a heartbeat.

"Well, if you haven't noticed, vampires tend to capture an audience's attention. Some pieces are highlighted purely off of the involvement of various creatures or else Twilight wouldn't be so recognizable." Divya has wasted her time on the Twilight series and she isn't too ashamed of it. It was light reading and worth it for her budding mind although she could have certainly gone without it. There are certainly better things to fill her mind with, which brings her to...No, he does seem familiar, but in terms of where they could have seen each other, she isn't so sure. It must not have been a notable enough interaction or else she would have recognized him right away especially with her own internal spiel about fate. "I don't know. Have we?" He couldn't possibly be from Hogwarts. It's dangerous assuming that sort of thing anyways. "I doubt it. I would certainly remember someone of your nature." Divya smiles, pushing her hair behind her ear.

The mention of Twilight makes him scoff, remembering at last minute to try and hide his obvious disdain for the series but only because there's a modicum of respect deserved somewhere in how the franchise somehow managed to make vampires non-threatening. If only normal people knew, eh? "Can you really call those beings in Twilight, vampires? Stoker is turning in his grave. Or his urn, rather - he was cremated." She definitely seems familiar, too; not from school, she doesn't give off those vibes. Please not from Diagon. Or Lincliff. All the times he's gotten cocky and ventured into wizarding territory for non-work purposes... they're bound to come back and bite at some point. Moron. "Do you go to Westminster School sixth form? If you know me from anywhere, it's probably there."

"If they're referenced as vampires, then- well, yes, we can consider them vampires. If our world had them, they would probably be closer to those ones anyway." Divya knows this to be false. It isn't as if she hasn't fallen into a whirlwind for a vampire before, but for once, she has to display her ignorance or at least make believe. Why would she want to give any sort of inclination that she had seen a real one anyways? Especially not after this whole witchfinder general nonsense from Mia's father. "I do not. I live in Whitby, actually," she says, lifting her copy of Dracula from her lap for a moment before setting it down again. "I go to a boarding school in Yorkshire. I really doubt we know each other from school." Divya laughs lightly as she interlaces her fingers and lets her hands fall into her lap.

Yeah, it's no surprise that she doesn't attend his school; despite her eloquent speech and obvious intelligence, she lacks the general vibe of those he comes across in the classroom (read: arseholes), and her accent has that northern drawl that Elijah's only familiar with due to one of the other witch hunters being from York. How fitting. "Whitby?" he repeats, smiling a little at the gesture towards the book. "What brings you down to London, then?" It's probably bad manners to smoke in front of a total stranger but he's not particularly fussed, reaching into his pocket to pull out a packet of Malboros and a lighter, drawing one from the row with his teeth before holding it out to her in offer. Hey, you never know.

It's a bit funny to her how he draws the cigarette with his teeth and she has to raise her fingertips to her cupid's bow again to disguise the amused smile. Divya isn't one to pass a free cigarette though, so she reaches out to take one. "Thank you," she responds quietly, placing it between her lips and lighting it before passing the lighter over to him. "Mum's an absolute nutter, so I'm staying with a friend in Camden for the time being." Divya says this quite plainly. Her mother is a nut, but that's an understatement. It's the polite way of saying that something is truly wrong with her mother. Well, it isn't actually all that polite. "Oh, she actually goes to Westminster. Perhaps you two are familiar? Her name's Mia." She lifts her eyebrows curiously as she brings her cigarette back to between her lips before she realizes she hasn't even managed to tell him her own name. Quickly exhaling, she extends her free hand and smiles kindly. "Oh, the name's Divya by the way."

He's halfway through lighting his own cigarette, lips curled in a smirk around it at being offered the lighter, when she mentions Mia and his blood runs cold. Of course. Just his luck that he manages to run into somebody from Yorkshire and they're friends with Mia, of all people - the girl who knows his secret, and currently has him blocked on all social media, which isn't doing much good for his stress levels. There's a momentary pause but Elijah manages to regain composure, plastering on that smirk again as he hands the lighter back to her. "I know Mia. We have classes together," is what he decides to go with. Fuck's sake. As for her explanation, he listens, intrigued and huffing in amusement at the comment about her mother. Join the club. "Elijah." He shakes her hand, promptly tucking his cigarette between his teeth to get it out of the way. "You're staying with Mia, then?"

Her eyes squint slightly at his immediate reaction, but her expression goes neutral once his seems to. It is curious, but not worthy of a mention to Mia, she thinks. "It's a pleasure," she says as she withdraws her hand. Her tone is a bit airy, but whatever. Sue her, will you? Sure, she's intrigued. Elijah is odd. He's dressed as if he isn't some random boy from Westminster for Circe's sake. "Yes, for the time being at least. Her family is being very generous." Her guilt is indescribable, but perhaps she feels particularly ill due to last night's ramblings. Divya has never realized the amount of patience she's had until then. Her mother always told her she was quite fiery and combative, but if she was those things, she probably would have gotten in trouble with the Ministry. "I should be leaving soon though. My mother can be vindictive, but she usually comes around within a few days if she ever intends to." She smiles slightly, not that bothered by the thought that her mother might not. She certainly would if not just to snap her wand again or something equally as redundant and unnecessary. "If she doesn't, then she is probably preparing my voodoo doll as we speak." Divya rolls her eyes a bit jokingly before glancing off towards a group of chatty teenagers strolling on by.

Her words reassure his anxieties a little - if she was a witch, there's no chance in hell that she would be staying in Mia's household, the father of which is literally leading the organisation both he and his classmate are ironically part of. And though he's still particularly curious about how Mia acquainted herself with a girl from Whitby, of all places, it isn't particularly important; they probably met on the internet or something. The topic of insane mothers is far more relatable, too. "And what led you both to such a precarious place?" he asks, blowing out a thin stream of smoke. "I mean, I'm not exactly best friends with my mother, but she's never resorted to voodoo dolls, at least to my knowledge." That was reserved for my siblings. Mentioning his family, let alone thinking about them, always brings along that familiar stab of guilt, but he's lived with it for long enough to effectively ignore it for the time being. Maybe it's too personal of a question for somebody he's only just met, but if she's leaving soon, it hardly matters. They probably won't meet again after this.

At the continued thought, she really has to laugh. It's not too difficult to imagine her mother doing such a thing because of course she has threatened it and Divya has watched her try to craft several before. And she doesn't mind sharing either (with limits) because he's right. They probably won't see each other again. "My mother owns this place out in Whitby. It's a little store where delusional women go to buy crystals and herbs. Stupid little knick knacks of that nature. It's called The Silver Moon if you're ever in town and want to become particularly pessimistic about people." Her tone is admittedly quite bitter, but she is bitter. Her mother's idiotic form of witchcraft have endangered her at one time or another. "She's into mysticism. I am not. I believe she finds that to be some sort of betrayal, which is a bit dramatic, but it's within her character- clearly."

Oh, he has to laugh at that. Not cruelly, but the irony of the whole situation is too amusing to ignore: the difference between fake witches, with the crystals and tarot cards, and the real ones in the world who seem as normal as anybody else until they withdraw a wand or, from personal experience, shatter things without touching them. "Ah, she's a witch, then?" he grins, raising his eyebrows and trying to suppress how relieved the revelation makes him feel. Though there's definitely something morbid in being happy that somebody isn't a witch so they therefore aren't a target. Having to be suspicious of literally everybody you encounter gets exhausting after a while. "Does she make potions too? Sells them in those glass bottles with corks that you buy from Etsy?" He's far more comfortable talking about this type of witch - the fake ones, the ones who haven't a stitch of magical ability but believe that painting a pentagram on the floor or hanging a dreamcatcher above their bed will invoke such power. If only they knew. "That seems a little dramatic, to fall out with somebody over not believing in all that."

"Well," Divya laughs, exhaling a puff of smoke. "My mother believes she's a witch." Maybe she's being unfair. If not for discovering that real magic exists, would she have ever stopped practicing alongside her mother? Surely she would have, right? It's visibly just a pile of falsehoods. "Oh, she does the whole lot- potions, curses, altars, prophecies, moon water. Everything you would catch on Tumblr when she was a teenager. In fact," she stops and gestures her cigarette towards a murder of crows pecking at one of the city trash cans. "My mother would argue that, at the sight of seven crows, there is an unmanageable secret in your future." Divya smiles at this, but a part of her is still superstitious and of course concerned. Her secret is already in effect, however, so it doesn't quite count as a prophecy. "If only one had flown away a bit earlier and you would be blessed with abundant wealth," she says with a wink. "Anyway, things are more complicated than that. My mother is very sensitive."

Part of Elijah suddenly wants to visit this store just to see what normal people think magic actually looks like. If it really was all crystals and prophecies and tarot cards, he'd likely be a lot more inclined to engage in it. But he's seen what magic really looks like, and it's far uglier. "That'd be quite charming if it wasn't causing such strife between you both." The flock of crows catches his attention just as she points towards them, slipping the cigarette from his mouth as he peers, bringing his other hand up to shield his eyes from the sun. He's never been one for believing superstition and rhymes, especially compared to everything else, but Divya's prophecy makes him laugh a little. An unmanageable secret. How apt. "Does it count if I go and scare one of them away?" he smirks, flicking his eyes back to Divya.

Maybe it's because she has been burned by her mother's beliefs, but she finds it a lot less cute and quaint than the word charming would seem to imply and she doesn't take too well to it. "It isn't charming. It's delusional and makes them miserable," she says with a small glance back towards him. Her tone is flat and not too bothered because realistically she's heard it before. "My mother gets agitated when things don't go her way, then does everything twice or thrice more. It's a waste of money really." Maybe if her mother wasn't spending so much of the profit from the store on false realities, then she wouldn't still share a room with her. When he mentions chasing one of them off, she laughs and her eyes light up slightly, tossing another glance towards him and giving him a once-over before turning towards the crows. "I don't really know. Maybe you should try it and pray only one leaves."

Miserable and delusional are probably the best words possible to describe his own mother, let alone hers, and it's a blessing that he's turned back to observe the crows in time for his grin to drop at hearing her talk. Her tone doesn't sound too offended, but he returns to face her with an apologetic glance nonetheless, there for a second before grinning at the joke she cracks. "Knowing my luck, I'd end up with the worst prophecy of all." Almost as if on cue, a few more crows soar into the frame and join the murder, pecking incessantly around the base of the trash can for crumbs and discarded food. It takes a few seconds to count them accurately, Elijah leaning sideways to try and look past a group of kids wandering in their view, but- "What does eleven of them mean?"

Divya smiles slightly, knowing that he's probably right. It seems that that always happens to her too, but she isn't so sure that it has anything to do with her (or that it would have anything to do with him) at all. "Uncertainty," she answers smoothly, turning towards him and adjusting how she is sitting in order to face him a bit more. "What secret are you so uncertain about, hm?" The thought of him harboring some sort of secret does seem to suit him especially with his attire. It matches his aesthetic and, of course, it intrigues her. Her eyebrows raise as she eyes him quizzically. "After all, the crows never lie. It's a proven science- studied it at Fyling and everything." Hopefully by saying that, he understands she doesn't really care to know. Sure, divulging your secrets to a random stranger you should never see again is rather...well, she isn't sure what it is really, but it's something.

All humour and sarcasm aside, receiving yet another secrecy prophecy is... well, it's unsettling, to say the least. He doesn't remember anything about crows in that first-year magic textbook he stole from Jai's room and fervently scoured in one sitting, so maybe it's just all one distasteful coincidence. But he really doesn't need reminding that he's harbouring a secret, even if it is from a flock of birds in a random park. "If the crows ever figure it out, I'm sure they'll let me know," he grins, voice matching her tone of general playfulness; after all, magic isn't real, at least in Divya's world. "In the meantime, I'm happy with- see? I'll take that." A kid tearing through on their bike makes some of the crows leap into the air and scatter, leaving behind six, and Elijah looks back at Divya with a satisfied smirk. "Third time lucky."

Her attention follows his, watching the crows fly away and counting them before turning towards him again. "It seems we are rather lucky today. Third time's a charm," she comments in turn, smiling sincerely. "After four attempts, it's sheer bogus. Of course." For a moment, her eyes linger on him and she realizes it would be rather sad if this was it. Divya turns her attention away again with a bit of a shyer smile. "I could go on all day. Better start finding your inner high vibrational being and some moon water during the new moon in Capricorn. Have some pinot noir and roll some yellow pearls in your hand for the next few days." Divya shoots him another glance. The fact that she remembers all of this does not surprise her. It's a bit comical. "If wealth is what you're after, forget climbing the career ladder. That is what you really want to do." Her tone is clearly sarcastic and when she's done, her eyebrows shoot up before she rolls her eyes and laughs.

As much as it's obvious from her tone that Divya thinks what she's recounting is utterly ridiculous - and to be fair, it totally is - it does make Elijah bite back a grimace at how real magic isn't too dissimilar. At least, what he's seen of it. The textbook he stole from Jai had all sorts of similarly-bizarre rituals with even stranger ingredients, especially in the few pages dedicated to potions, and the thought that those enchantments and concoctions are actually real and have genuine consequences is... terrifying, to say the least. And that's not even a patch on the shit he's seen Sarai and Jai do. "I must admit, the only part of those instructions that registered with me was pinot noir, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued." The smoke that escapes his mouth comes out in jagged little puffs with his laughter, though it's a little more considerate this time; as funny as it is, her annoyance with the whole faux-magic topic has been made very clear. "But yes, that sounds- well, to use your words, delusional. How did she even get into all that?"

"Wine magick is the only one worth while," she laughs, not being able to manage a smirk. It's all too ridiculous to her for her to be able to pretend to be smooth about it. At the question, she narrows her eyes in thought, glancing down as she tries to sort through her mother's reasons and what she believes actually happened. "It was popular online when she was a teenager- on Tumblr. I don't know if you are familiar," she start. "It was a trend going into the twenties. To be fair, the aesthetic is rather gorgeous, but anyway, my mother never outgrew it. I don't really know why she started believing in it. From the sounds of things, the curses she put on other students in her sixth form were...unsuccessful. Well, they definitely sent people away, but that's a pretty natural response to someone trying to curse you, isn't it?" Divya quips, then shrugs. "But, if you want what she told me, Circe called upon her." Her tone is more playful again with far less scrutiny. She even gives him a quick wink.

Whilst he is familiar with Tumblr, it's not a social media platform he's ever bothered exploring; an Instagram account is enough so he can message his classmates, as rare as that is, and to post the odd photo to make it look like the family is completely normal and functioning well. There are facades to maintain, after all. "I didn't realise people took Tumblr trends so seriously," he comments, with a little huff of disbelief. The cigarette between his fingers is almost down to the filter, so he takes one last long drag, the tip glowing red, before tossing it to the concrete below and crushing it under his shoe. If he wasn't in the presence of somebody he's actually getting along with, he'd pull out another cigarette straight away - chain-smoking has always been a nasty habit of his - but Elijah's a little too proud. The wink makes him laugh, though, as does the Circe comment. "I wish I could put curses on some of my classmates. It'd do the both of us a world of good. But Circe sounds fun - I'll keep that in mind."

She shrugs, "Aesthetics were particularly important at the time. Taking them so seriously isn't that surprising when you consider what was going on with social media and such." From her mother's information, the Internet was particularly miserable back then. Divya still has a preference against it entirely. Her Witchagram is close to death at all times and she lies about not being interested in Instagram at all. Well, it isn't a lie if it's true, but she doesn't have it for other reasons. When he responds to her comment about curses, she raises her cigarette-free hand to her mouth to prevent the immediate smile from being too obvious, but she laughs and pulls her hand away. As someone who has cursed a classmate of hers, it's more than just amusing. "Mhm, it would be rather nifty, wouldn't it? Some Zippitus-yer-Trapatus," Divya motions with an air wand before resuming the toying between her thumbs. "If you're minding it, then maybe you should craft an altar for her. It will cleanse your mind of its uncertainty- probably."

The motion with the air wand and the spell she says, as obviously fake as it is, makes his stomach drop for a split second. It's almost hilarious how prevalent magicians and magic are in popular culture and yet they exist so shamelessly, in their own little communities with their secret streets and alleyways, tapping into power that normal people (aren't they called Muggles? He's definitely heard Sarai say that before) couldn't even comprehend. He has a difficult enough time wrapping his own head around it. "The next time I'm up north, I might drop into your mother's store and ask for some personal advice," he smirks, shaking his head at the absurdity of the image. Elijah knows what real magic stores look like, how they feel. A fake one decorated in dreamcatchers and incense burners might be a welcome relief. "Any recommendations for charms to help me deal with my secret?" He's clearly taking the mick, grin big and wide, but for once he doesn't actually mean any offense by it. Plus, mocking it allows him to dismiss the reality of it in general.

Her anxiety is rather low considering the fact that she's just been made aware of whatever a witchfinder general is just the night before. What she is talking about is bogus and she doesn't believe she can get called out for it. Besides, she's denounced it about a thousand times. "You should try to sometime this summer. My mother would certainly get amusement from it, having a boy around the store. It doesn't happen much." It's a generalization because older men closer to her mother's age stumble around from time to time, but most teenage boys are rather uninterested. Not even interested enough to try to cause a stir in the shop. "For relieving your little secret," she starts, racking her brain for the proper 'treatments.' "Invest in some sodalite if you're fearful or rhodonite if you're searching for forgiveness. Amazonite should boost your self-esteem, but you seem rather settled." Calling someone pretentious upfront hasn't been her style ever let alone now when she actually enjoys it. "Try burning red candles to summon courage and strength and ward off enemies. It supposedly makes you more attractive too, which..." And she holds her tongue for a moment before glossing over the subject altogether. "Sit in the Sun with your palms upwards. Eat more mint. I could go on." She grins before taking one last drag of her cigarette, gently stomping it out with the bottom of her flat. "It really depends on what your little secret is about."

His smile widens the longer she talks, a mixture of amusement and confusion considering his lack of knowledge surrounding real witchcraft is so limited; if that textbook is anything to go by, there's a pretty decent chance that some of these rituals, as bogus as they sound, are derived from the real thing. An eyebrow lifts at the settled comment, though she's certainly not incorrect on the surface so he takes it in his stride, and the thing about candles making him more attractive earns her a laugh. "Do I need help in that department?" It's not asking for an answer, more so just a tease, before he decides fuck it and reaches for another cigarette. "If sitting in the sun and eating mint could solve all my problems, I'd have attempted it a long time ago. But thanks for the advice, I'm sure it will prove most useful." Obviously he's not going to try it, and the matching tone of voice to hers conveys that; though he might visit that shop. Just for a laugh.

"I didn't say that," she responds without the need to answer. Her eyes glance down at the second cigarette, but she doesn't mind. Plenty of her friends at Hogwarts seem to depend on those little rolls of tobacco, so she doesn't pay it much thought. "Oh, well, there was no way to attempt it without being enlightened by the ways of witchcraft. Invest in your Inner Eye perhaps and then you would find everything works perfectly. If it isn't working, it's because you're resisting enlightenment," she says, raising a hand to her forehead and mimicking pulling energy from it similar to a puff of air coming from someone's mouth on a chilly day. "Anyway, I told you about my mother. What about yours? Not friends, but not at voodoo doll status either." It only seems fair, but she also wouldn't blame him for not wanting to share.

He holds out the cigarette pack to her almost instinctively, the corner of his mouth twisting up at her non-answer, but it stills at the question about his mother. It's not the first or last time he's been asked - kids at school have inquired too, wondering why his other siblings aren't in the younger years at school or why Az hasn't been seen in town for a while - and he's always fobbed them off with stories of illness or boarding school. His parents are a different story, though. "She's over-protective," is the explanation he goes with. Hey, it's not a lie. "I mean, I've got five siblings and she's fallen out with all of us at one point or another. But like I said - nothing to start sticking pins in voodoo dolls over."

Her lips part, starting to go on about Oh, that's not how that- except her thoughts catch up to her mouth before she can even begin to. Her mouth shuts and she nods thoughtfully before opening it again, gesturing to deny his offering. "Oh, no. Thank you though," she says with a small smile before approaching the subject of his mother again. "I understand. I don't by any sort of experience, but I'm sure that becomes agitating. And you said you have five siblings? Your place must be busy then." Her house has always been rather lonely, very isolating. Her mother wanted to focus all of her energy into making her a proficient witch instead of having to go chasing multiple children around. To compromise with Divya's loneliness, her mother bought her a kitten, but it isn't the same. That said, it's probably somehow better than having five siblings.

"Well, I don't live with all five of them." He can't even properly remember the days of when they all co-existed in the same house. It couldn't really be called living, considering Az was only five when everything first kicked off and a sense of normality has yet to be achieved. Sometimes he just prays that Sarai and Jai will follow suit and move out, he doesn't even care where to; whatever gets them out of the house is satisfactory. Give him and his parents some peace, for once, stop the nightly screaming matches. "Three of them moved out a while ago. It's not too bad now." The fact that he doesn't have any contact with the ones who left is not something that Elijah's going to shout about, even to somebody he won't see again after today. "Is it just you at home, or is the fun of putting up with your mother at least shared out a little?"

Divya nods, listening along. She doesn't understand and isn't going to try to considering it doesn't seem he wants to get into it. "No, it's just me. My mother never married- never dated actually." It's an oddity that she values romance as much as she does considering her mother had generally removed any focus of that from their lives. "I was a sperm donor baby," she adds with a light laugh. "And my mother always said that it was a sign that the in vitro didn't want her to have more children by giving her multiples. Therefore, she should focus her energy on only one baby witch." There's more to that, but telling people you consumed your twin in the womb lacks class. "I was homeschooled for a while too. It was definitely isolating."

"I can't imagine growing up in a household so... quiet," Elijah admits, with a soft laugh. Just the mere concept of him and his mum, nobody else, is almost incomprehensible; for one, there would have been no incentive to hide his magic. There would have been no reason to be scared - at least, not in the way that he is now. "Three siblings at home is a lot but at least there's always something happening." That happening is never anything good. Still, you get used to keeping your head down and not saying anything. It's a survival tactic. "Is your school any good? I admit, I've been up north maybe twice in my whole life, and the entire time I was too cold to really focus on the scenery." It's only a partial joke; the north might have greenery but it certainly doesn't reach thirty-degrees in summer the way that London does.

Although she's readily capable of lying to herself, convincing herself that pursuing certain boys is a good idea or that she no longer fancies them once things get serious, she isn't always the best liar to others and she hopes her shortness doesn't expose her. "It's nice. It's...school though. It isn't Heaven," she answers with a small smile. "It's a boarding school, which means its whole purpose is to rob you and they don't mind much after they have your money. Most teachers are pretty high and mighty. Not pretentious in an interesting fashion either, but far more mundane in an old person sort of way." It isn't as if she doesn't have friends, who she knows from the streets in her neighborhood, that actually go there. Divya feels pretty confident in her ability to lie. "I prefer it here. I don't believe you're missing out on anything by not visiting." Maybe she prefers it because her mother isn't here. Either way, she prefers being at Hogwarts more. It might be school, but it's also freedom to a certain degree.

Elijah is somewhat an expert on lying, for obvious reasons. And he's usually pretty good at telling when other people are lying, at least if they aren't utterly airtight - and Divya certainly isn't, so he's aware that she isn't telling him the whole truth. But he most certainly isn't one to pry, not at all; most people say that then immediately contradict themselves, but the only time Elijah's ever pried in his life is when he was trying to figure out where Az lives. And he still doesn't know. Maybe it's time to adopt a different tactic. "Sounds just like mine, to be honest," he smiles, blowing out a stream of smoke. "Well- the people at mine are pretentious in a way that denotes how their dad's money bought them their place. But I assume that's the same at most boarding schools." I mean, it's not like that's not exactly how he earned himself a place there.

Her mother can't afford boarding school to be honest and it's rather obvious if he ever saw where they lived or how they lived except he won't, so it doesn't matter. Besides, they offer scholarships and bursaries to cover that sort of thing anyways. It does worry her a little though- that her lies might be too obvious. "Boarding school students are generally of that nature, yes, but what makes us any different?" She shrugs and smiles slightly, arms moving to fold over her copy of Dracula. They both seem pretentious and maybe not in a daddy's money sort of way, but pretentious nonetheless. "Your family must be of some sort of wealth in order to have six children and still afford boarding school."

"My dad's a banker," he says simply, lacking any of the pretention of his previous demeanour. The family being wealthy is, surprisingly, not anything he's been particularly bragging about; it's just a fact of his life. Though he can't deny that he enjoys how it affords him a decent education and decent suits and how it funds whatever fixation he has at the time. Another benefit of being the favourite child: they buy him whatever with little-to-no argument. What they can't afford is to lose the favour of their only 'normal' offspring. "I don't think he's ever struggled - or at least, he's never told me if he has." The cigarette between his fingers is already burned down to the filter, much quicker than the last one. Again, bad habit. "I mean, London's expensive. Do you visit a lot?"

Divya nods. She supposes that explains the suits and the fact that he dresses as if he's some miniature banker himself. "To my understanding, parents don't usually share their financial hardships with their children should they find themselves struggling." Or at least they shouldn't, she thinks. "I visit during the summer and that's it, but that was only once my friends started migrating over here. I don't have the sort of money to spend on a hotel out here." Partially because she has only ever worked for her mother, who hoards her money in a private account for once she turns eighteen. Whenever she's able to convince her mother to give her some of it, she passes it off to her friends' parents or the local bookstore because it's never enough to do much more than that. It's probably illegal once she starts putting things together, but not worth the argument. "Have you always lived in London then? I can't imagine growing up in the city."

It occurs to him that there are almost definitely a couple of hotel owners in the organisation, and his father is likely friends with even more, so it would be relatively easy to swindle a cheaper price for a room. But then he catches himself realising that he's even considering it for somebody he's literally just met, and swiftly discards the idea. "Yes, I grew up here," he nods. "I can't imagine growing up anywhere but in the city. Though I live down in Hackney, about an hour away. This is really the only genuinely nice part of London." One of the upsides of the tourist destinations and renovated areas being kept so concentrated in the centre of the city is it allows the surrounding boroughs to not be so insanely crowded - though they are permanently some degree of busy. It is the capital, after all. "Though I must admit, you never run out of things to do. I've probably only seen half of what the city has to offer."

Divya nods, listening intently until her phone starts to buzz. Her hand reaches into her tote and a finger quickly sweeps her phone onto silent, not breaking her eyes away from him. "I have barely seen a thing in London, but it's nice for being a proper city," or so she thinks from what little she's seen. Perhaps she would come to believe something different if she gave it a real look. "Perhaps I should pay the outerbits some attention sometime, but...I should get going. I didn't intend on staying out for so long." And she had told Mia she would be right back. She's assuming that's who was ringing her, but she's probably wrong. "Say, if it isn't a bother, what's your number? In case you visit Whitby- of course." Divya asks without much hesitation, shifting towards the edge of the bench seat as she withdraws her phone. She has been dared to ask someone out about a thousand times (or so it feels that way) and it usually goes poorly. She's used to rejection and isn't too fearful of facing it.

There's a flicker of something - hesitation? fear? - that goes through him at the request for his number, but it quickly disappears; after all, between sixth form and work and the organisation, it'd be a miracle to find the time to ever venture up to Whitby, and he isn't going to leave Sarai and Jai in the house by themselves with their dad anytime soon. So Elijah fishes his phone out of his pocket, smooth enough to make it look like he didn't think twice, and reels off the digits. "You'll be the first person I call," he smiles. It's more likely that they'll never see each other again after this encounter, but he might as well humour her. "And likewise, if you are ever back down in London. Though I'm sure Mia will enlighten me of your return all the same."

After typing his phone number into her contacts, she grins and stands before tucking her phone and novel into her tote bag. "I should return towards the end of August. Maybe we can all grab lunch together or something." She's curious what Mia will have to say about him, but that can wait the walk back to her place. "It was a pleasure. Have a wonderful one."
