The current head of house is Professor Robins. Professor Robins was originally hired for the teaching position of Defense Against the Dark Arts but was replaced once Professor Plasmus came along. She is the Head of Hufflepuff House and was much happier teaching Care of Magical Creatures for consecutive terms. She was the former Flying Professor but gave up that position to become the Deputy Head, which she has also stepped down from. She took a year off from Hogwarts to do some travelling but quickly got back into the swing of things and resumed her post as Head of House for Hufflepuff.
The current male prefect is Reynaud Etienne. Reynaud is a Pure-Blood wizard in his Fifth year of study at Hogwarts. He is a very mature and intellectual young man. He plays the saxophone, and he loves jazz music, and has become quite interested in the subject of Wandlore.
The current female prefect is Sascha Guthrie. Sascha is a Half-blood witch in her Fifth year of study at Hogwarts. She is the first member of her family to not attend Beauxbâtonss. She is a sweet girl, the kind who will pick up a bug to keep it from getting squashed.
Founder Professor Helga Hufflepuff was a witch from a Welsh background who lived in the early Middle Ages. She, along with friend Rowena Ravenclaw and colleagues Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin founded Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is the namesake of Hufflepuff House. Unlike the other founders who chose their students based on certain qualities such as bravery, intellect, or ambition, Hufflepuff accepted them all, and while this has given the House a somewhat unfair view for centuries, it should be noted that it is not without its share of exceptional individuals. If Hufflepuff House were to be described in a few words however, fairness and loyalty would sum it up well as these were qualities that, if any, its founder prized above all else. Many students of Hufflepuff embody these traits as well.
Hufflepuff was said to bring others of different backgrounds together in the building of Hogwarts due to her charming and kind ways. Helga also had an aptitude for cooking charms as many of her recipes are still used at the school to date. It is unknown when she died.
She does not appear to have applied particularly strict standards of selection to her house, which sets her apart from the other Founders by making her an egalitarian. She left behind a relic which is a small golden cup. It is supposed to have many magical abilities, but none are known.
The name Helga is from Helge, from Old Norse heilagr, meaning "prosperous" or "brave." Their symbol is the badger, a large mammal related to the weasels with distinctive white stripes on its head. In Celtic mythology, a badger was a guide. The badger also can symbolize a tendency to be hard-working, strong and tenacious (sticking to something and not giving up). Hufflepuffs are known for loyalty and hard work. Hufflepuff could mean "huff and puff", or blustery. "Huff" also means to breathe; "Puff" is a Medieval term for pastry.
