He waves back, blushing a deep red shade, before looking back at his parchment.

"Helps if you don't know what a spell does," she adds. Anne was quite well with Spell etymology, so was glad the subject came up.

Does she really have to say anything? Ana lays her head down, content with just listening.

He smiles, "Great, 15 points to Ravenclaw and 5 to Hufflepuff." He clasps his hands, "Now the ministry wanted us to spend a while working on spell etymology but I can't bear it because it's not the most exciting thing. So let's just get through this as quickly as possible, and then we can do a practical on counter-curses. Can anyone give me examples of spells that you've looked at in the past and the meaning behind the spell?"

Jake was reclined in his seat, his head hung back. He had listened to the first question and couple of answers in silence, deciding whether or not he'd participate. As the next question was asked, he slowly raised his head up. "Periculum means risks or danger in Latin. It's the spell for shooting a flare into the air. It indicates you're in danger, hence the incantation: Periculum." Jake explained with ease, before dropping his head back again.

Oh, this was Anne's time to shine. "There's Sonorus, which makes a wizard's voice louder through a wand. In latin it means loud and noisy." She knew others as well, but only stated the first that came to her head.

Rhianna, aiming to impress the teacher, deciding to pick a complicated spell to give a meaning to. "Petrificus Totalus Tria is a spell that complete binds the body save for breathing and blinking. It can bind up to three people. Although petrificus is not a Latin word, the Greek borrowing petra means rock. The suffix, 'ficus', which regars a sense of making or becoming to its headword, is very common in Latin. So it means becoming like rock."

Don't take yourself so seriously—no one else does.

He beams at the group, "Alright, great work guys - Five points to each of you. I'm calling the lesson here, and our next one will be on counter-curses. So your homework is: study the counter-spells using the textbook and we'll have a go at testing them out in the next lesson. Class dismissed!"
