Forum: Index > Votes > Discussions
Note: This topic has been unedited for 554 days. It is considered archived - the discussion is over. Do not add to unless it really needs a response.

Outcome: Discussions will be brought over to the wiki and the sorting system will be modified to fit the new format with the assistance of Jaye. The discussions will be for raising concerns and requesting RPs. The current RPing system will remain in place - if the wiki wants a switch a seperate vote will occur at a later date.

So, given recent events and suggestions that were made off said recent evnts I think this finally warrants a discussion (pun not intended). The suggestion made was that we have a sort of open forum for people to ask for Roleplays and stuff on to bring the community closer together. Doing that with the current system would be clunky and odd, so my proposition is that we bring discussions to DARP for that exact reason. For more information on discussions click here.

So, we probably would have brought these to DARP a long time ago if not for one reason. We can't use the old system of forums if we brings discussions in, and as you are probably well aware... we heavily use teh forum system, especially for sorting. By adding discussions we'd have to figure out a new way to do sorting, as the current system would be rendered useless.

The discussions could prove very useful for our community, bringing us closer together but it would require some ingenuity on the part of S&S. Ingenuity that they may not have the time to do, and if the current system isn't broken, which it isn't, why fix it? So, now you all know BOTH sides of the issue and it is ultimately up to the wiki's discretion as to which way go from here.

  1. I think the discussions could prove a very useful tool for our wiki but as I said... it will take some figuring out, but I really think that's some figuring out that we need to do.

  2. I'm all for it. I think it would be quite beneficial for our wiki to implement something of this sort. I just hope we can figure out a way to not mess with S&S at the same time and I'm confident that we can do just that if we put our minds to it. Against (-1)

  1. It might actually take me off the wiki, sadly. I don't want to go against the rest of the wiki, but I think the way we RP is fine, and I'm not a big fan of how other wikis RPm I don't think we need a wiki overhaul to fix the problems people are outlining. We have open RPs in classes, and Common Rooms. That's what the "General RP" format is for. Is there something else we can implement, without having to do this? (If non-admins can't vote, feel free to discard this. Love sought is good, but giv'n unsought is better. 20:49, May 29, 2017 (UTC)
The suggestion isn't to change how we RP. It's to bring discussion boards into the wiki instead of forums. The way we RP would not be affected in the slightest.

So, I don't think everyone would have to roleplay in that new system. We can retain the general roleplay format, like literally every other new RP wiki. We could easily leave it to the users' discretion, I think? Open RPs would benefit shy users and geenral roleplay format would benefit others.

I didn't know it was for roleplaying at all. I thought it was supposed to be to ask for roleplays to the community, versus directing in on a few users. If it's to roleplay inside the forums, then I don't think I can support that portion of it. I don't believe we should have all these different medias for roleplaying, since the pages are working fine. If it's for people to ask for roleplays (and obviously put in suggestions or complaints, which is a given, in my opinion, and I'll support that regardless), then I'm more than willing to support that. I think that's a great idea. However, general roleplays already exist on pages and it shouldn't be necessary to create forums to accomplish that further. I don't want to go against the community and I would much rather support you all than not, but I've been on wikis that require roleplaying through forums/threads and I'm personally in belief that roleplaying on pages is a better system.

It's not about RPing. What you said is exactly what I brought it up for. I didn't intend on bringing up a vote about changing RP styles, that wasn't my suggestion and that wasn't what this vote was about. I'm sorry if that was confusing. This vote is SOLELY about bringing discussions, which are linked in the voting material to DARP. It's not about changing how we RP. That would be a different vote, one I don't think we need, but if the community wants to change... they could bring it up in a seperate vote, but again that's NOT what this one is about.

I support your opinion, NAP, I do, but I also think it'd facilitate roleplaying for some users who just can't bring themselves to ask for RPs. And to be fair, it's not like we're welcoming a multitude of new ways to RP, it's just one potential way. I don't think that was Carn's intention, either. He wants to focus on suggestions and discussing problems. I'm just adding on to say opening it as a way to host open roleplays, too. It's just a matter of people deciding what they're more comfortable of using. We wouldn't force them to pick one - they could choose freely. But if it makes them more comfortable, I don't see why we shouldn't give it a go? That said, Carn's right, this forum is for opening discussions for suggestions and such.

...then I guess I'm still very confused. Why open it up through discussions? Can we just create a page or something like our Wanted Character List that everyone can edit? I'm trying to understand what this new thing would look like, and what it would add to the wiki. Love sought is good, but giv'n unsought is better. 21:32, May 29, 2017 (UTC)
The discussions would make the suggestions and asking for role-plays more seamless and less clunky. It'd be like an actual forum Ck, that's all. It would just make for more seamless and smooth communication.

I'm not confused about the purpose of this vote and I've already voted where I think it's right. My only point is that we can't add a "general roleplay format" when we already have "general roleplay" sections that people just rarely take advantage of. (I say rarely because I have seen a few users, notably Hecate, use them some.) Why not just try to use that one more? I get that this isn't about that though, so this'll be the last that I say on this matter here.

So from reading everything here, it looks like it's just replacing the forums, which we use to keep track of things (sorting, missions, etc) and won't affect RPing pages. Jaye said she has some experience using these on other wikis for the sorting and the like...could we see an example of how that works so we could see what sort of changes we'd need to implement for sorting? I think if it won't affect RPing pages and we have a good alternative for sorting it'll be fine...but having that example to see how it'll be different would be good I think. It's really a matter of just handling the forumheaders, the kind of pages the links would make, etc etc. For example, in IRPW the title is automatically Acceptance:Student Sorting/Character Name. It doesn't open a whole new forum. Granted it'll show up as if it were a main page, but with a twist of coding, it'll pre-load whatever you'd want it to. So it's really the same as a forum, except it's a main page. If you'd like another example, there's also OARP that has a similar format, and the title is automatically Acceptance:Students/Character Name. Not much would change about that. There's also the Prefect and Quidditch Captain applications, though there certainly are things to tweak with that one. The point is, the changes won't be anything out of this world and I'm sure we can adopt new ways of sorting and getting other forums approved. :)
