Travis Orbin - Simbelmynë Session - "Symmetry Circumscribed By Entropy"
Simbelmynë is a solo project headed by the very talented Serge Fariñas. Excerpted from the respective website: "Simbelmynë is a musical project inspired by love of ecology and awe of the natural world. It is a pure and abstract expression of raw emotion born of a unique interpretation of reality. All music exists within a social, spatial, and temporal context and all that all those factors have an influence upon the music itself and how it is perceived. The phenomenon of these interactions is what I call the ecology of music. I hope you will join in this mutualistic relationship as I share this dynamic expression of life with you."
Serge contacted me in October of last year and I began to compose parts for his tunes. Between tracking Pete P, I Am King, Dyed In Grey, an Of Legends tour, transcribing Lamb Of God, etc. I didn't finish slaying this beast out of my home studio until this June.
Kicking off the video series is the first two tunes from the EP; I'll be posting sequentially per the track order. An upload of "Trillium" will soon follow this video.
"Symmetry Circumscribed By Entropy" features the fastest lengthy run of double kick that I've yet tracked, right out of the gate. A demo of this tune was originally recorded by my bud Alex Rudinger. Due to schedule conflicts with Threat Signal he couldn't record the rest of the EP. I dug his parts and ended up keeping some intact but certainly made it my own in the end.
For the softer/acoustic passages in Serge's material -- well, the parts that I could punch -- I utilized a lower tuning on the snare, felt beaters and a different EQ on the kick. This doesn't really come across on the final mix but can be heard in the isolated drum takes.
Speaking of, I decided to throw in the iso drums for all of these tunes as a way to show appreciation of my fans' continued support. Thanks everyone and happy holidays! The .mov files are still for sale via my Big Cartel store if anyone would like a hard copy shipped to them. I'm also considering offering .m4v downloads of each of the iso drum videos; please let me know in the comment section if you'd be interested.
