The quintessential grande dame, she put him on his mettle constantly, and allowed no perceived imbecility to go unremarked in her vicinity, traits which have recurred undiluted in her granddaughter. There was a good heart in the substrata of a rock-solid self-esteem, another commonality between the two women, with more yet to be discovered, no doubt.*
