Her face would turn stony. "Even if it hurts our house and family?"

"The rest of our siblings should not have been breaking rules, just as you should not have been," she said. "I know it's an unpopular opinion. But it's what's right."

"Charity...if you do this everyone will be upset at you. ...and worse, the unicorn won't protect our house anymore."

She didn't have the heart to tell Melinda that she didn't really believe the unicorn story. "They'll move on."

She would nod. "EXACTLY! They live in the forest back there, and help protect our house from the other creatures back there...I saw it yesterday, and one of the adults helped bring me home. ...but if you close the fence, they won't be able to get in anymore, or do their unicorn magic on the house!"

"Dad's got plenty of enchantments on the house," she said. "We're perfectly safe. And you never questioned the safety of our house before today."

"Because I didn't know the unicorns were protecting us, or that you were going to ruin it." She seemed pretty sincere and serious.

"Unicorns wouldn't fit through our fence, sweetie."

She would frown. "...you don't believe me. Why would I lie?"

"I don't know. Why would you?" she asked, turning the question on Melinda. Maybe Faith wasn't such a good influence on her...

"I'm not lying! ...but you won't go with me to show you and prove it's true. You just don't want to believe me!"

"I wasn't distressed at all...I was riding a unicorn! Why would I be scared? It had already killed the troll."

"Melinda, do you hear yourself? This is ridiculous. And this discussion is over." She walked over to the fence, found the loose fence post and tapped it with her wand. "Reparo."

She would open her mouth to yell, but Charity had already finished. She would frown, like she couldn't believe it. "If bad things start happening, then they're your fault." She would turn and walk promptly back into the house, and up to her room into her bed.

She sighed. She pushed against the post again, just to be sure it wasn't going anywhere, before walking back into the House herself.

The next morning, Thomas walked into the Backyard and casually pushed on the fence post that should've let him free. It didn't budge. Thomas glared at the fence, then back at the house. "You've gotta be kidding me! Charity!" He kicked at the fence post, and then at a few other ones on either side of it.

She would walk out looking hopeful. "...do you think you can open it back up?"

He looked at it for a moment. He went down the left kicking each one, and pulling on them. Nothing budged, so he went down the right side, doing the same. About four fence posts down, one of them seemed like it could be coaxed into opening. "Possibly."

"Faith thought maybe if I got you one of dad's tools, you would be strong enough to open it."

"Yeah..." he said, wishing he was just seventeen. He glanced around the backyard. "Why don't you go grab that shovel over there," he said pointing.

She would hurry over and drag the heavy shovel to Thomas.

Thomas lifted the shovel with ease. He dug a bit under the fence post, and then placed the tip of the shovel underneath the fence post, and started pushing down on the handle, hoping to snap the fence post... and not the shovel.

She would watch with trepidation. She would speak quietly and unsure. "Maybe I should go get something metal from dad's tools for this...?"

Thomas and Melinda would hear the sounds of wood splitting.

"No, I think it's working," he said. He applied a little more pressure, willing the stupid post to break.

She would take a step back, afraid when it broke something would fly and hit her.

"Come on...." he said through gritted teeth. He heard more snapping and eventually, the fencepost would fly up a few inches. Thomas put the shovel to the side and pulled up on the fence post with his hands, trying to leave it intact on the fence, and just sort of hinged up near the top.

He pulled up on the fence post, and sure enough, it swung up, as though it was on a hinge. He turned around and grinned. "Yup."
