Mayan Myth:
Mayans were sophisticated observers of the sky. Mayans used their astronomical knowledge to predict future human events. They were aware of the movements of Mars. In one of the ancient Mayan books, Mars is represented by a series of pictures of a long-nosed beast, shown descending to varying depths from a sky band.

Greek and Roman Myth:
Ares was the Greek god of war, and was identified with the Roman god, Mars. He always acted like a strong warrior and had an insatiable desire for violence.

He enjoyed the great noise of battle, and he loved bloody warfare. Conflict and mindless killing was how he liked to spend the day. Mars was the father of the famous Roman heroes Romulus and Remus, who founded the city of Rome. For that reason, he was believed to come to the aid of Romans in times of crisis.
